Marc JB from Bimbo Jones and his DBM50's
Marc JB is one-third of British dance sensation Bimbo Jones, and together with his studio partner Lee Dagger he has been responsible for remixing songs from the best of the best in music, from Pink to Annie Lennox and back. Add the third element, singer/songwriter Katherine Ellis to the mix and you have Bimbo Jones, a collective that has seen an enormously creative, consistently high-quality output and smash successes.
Today, Marc JB is active as a music producer, remixer, DJ, and
multi-instrumentalist. Not strange when you realize Marc comes from
a family where his grandfather, Jack Jackson was not only a
celebrated trumpeter and bandleader, but also a pioneering radio
DJ, and his dad owned a chain of music shops specializing in
synthesizers. Funnily enough though, what inspired young Marc was
accidentally bumping in to a rock god. When Marc was 4 he happened
to bump into Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, a meeting so profound to
him it set him on the path of music.
Marc JB started out playing thrash guitar in underground clubs,
before becoming the accomplished multi-instrumentalist he is today
-and even today, he can often be found playing live with his chill
out hip hop band Jacuti. Once Marc met and partnered up with Lee
Dagger, things took a turn towards dance, and they soon established
themselves with their fresh sounds and utterly creative approach to
music.
This led to remixing over 50 tracks including the likes of Pink,
Janet Jackson, Usher, Deep Dish, Annie Lennox as well as more
recently Alphabeat's 'Fascination' and '10,000 Nights', Britney's
'Piece of me' and Ultra Nate's 'Give it all you got'. They were
also co-producers behind the Leo Sayer-sampling Number One 'Thunder
in my heart, again' by Meck.
But when Marc and Lee met singer/songwriter Katherine Ellis (Roger
Sanchez, Ruff Drivers), it was clear to them they needed to team up
and release their first album: 'Harlem 1 Stop'. Bimbo Jones was
established and a force to be reckoned with.
In the past decade Bimbo Jones has been equally successful in the
mainstream and the underground and have scored over 50 number 1
dance tunes and have become the must have remixer for any
self-respecting artist. But it hasn't just been all about remixing,
Bimbo Jones wrote and produced the dance anthem 'Come Fly with Me'
and with Katherine Ellis, they released their critically acclaimed
album 'And I try' in Summer 2008 releasing 2 singles from the album
and 'Harlem 1 Stop' got to number 1 on the UK dance charts and 'And
I try' got to Number 1 in the Billboard 100.
Marc uses lots of TC Electronic gear, so the link to Dynaudio was obvious, but Marc chose to work with Dynaudio because it was the obvious superior sound quality that appealed to him. As he says about the DBM50s: " The thing that appeals to me about them is that they fit on a really small desk - and they sound absolutely fantastic. Marc also loves the fact that the DBM50s give him the "nice club frequencies" as he calls it (about 45Hz at -3 DB), but are also really nice and clear when it comes to the top-end. Marc also noted that the 'slant' of the speakers is prefectly angled, giving him a perfect sweet-spot right in his face when in a desktop mixing situation.
